As the City of Vancouver puts final preparations in place for the Twenty-First Winter Olympic Games, an equally important event is slowly coming to a conclusion: The Olympic Torch Relay.
The Olympic flame has crossed the country, and will be making perhaps it's most important and significant stop in Calgary (excluding the arrival in Vancouver of course) on January 18th and 19th.
As Calgary was the last (and only other) Canadian city to host the Winter Olympic Games, the stage is set for an amazing set of celebrations, and as such, I felt it best to provide a bit of guide.
January 18th 2010
Torch Relay: 4:10PM : Torch relay begins north of 109th Ave SE on Macleod Tr. The relay continues north along Macleod until heading east on 42nd Ave 5:18PM : Relay turns westward at 7th St SE, continues east until intersecting with MacLeod Trail and continues north along Macleod. The relay will follow a path taking it from macLeod, NorthEast up Spiller Road, west along 25th Ave, returning North bound on Macleod. 6:07PM : Relay heads westbound on 17th Ave S until heading north along 14th St SW, and back East along 9th Avenue South. Turning Northbound at 1st St SE at the Glenbow Museum, the torch will head NorthEast at historic Stephen Ave (8th Ave SE), where it will arrive at its destination. 7:00PM : The Olympic flame returns to Calgary's Olympic Plaza for the first time in 22 years.

Calgary's premiere women's choir, the Savridi Singers will be preforming, conducted by University Of Calgary graduate and Savridi artistic director Torri Airhart. 7:00PM : Olympic flame arrives at Olympic Plaza in Calgary
January 19th 2010

After 9:04AM : The Olympic torch makes a stop at the spot many of the 2010 Canadian Olympians trained at: the University of Calgary's Olympic Oval, where Susan Auch and Kyle Yoshida will skate the Oval carrying the flame. After 9:04AM : The Olympic relay will continue around the north and west perimeter of the University of Calgary's Campus. The torch will then leave campus and make it's way to Centre St. N by way of 24th Ave NW. 11:47AM : Second Calgary Torch Relay concludes at Russet Rd. NE and 16th Avenue.
Final Torch Relay: 11:52AM : Relay begins at 17th Ave and 28th St SE. Continues up 17th Ave. 12:17PM : Torch relay concludes at 17th Ave and 54th St SE
------------------------------
It is important to note that all times and dates are tentative. This should be used more as a guide concerning what to expect than as a tool to plan your days. As a UofC student I am stoked that the Olympic flame will be passing through that day. Should make for an upbeat mood on campus.
Additionally, worth nothing that the 20th sees the Torch leave Calgary making a stop at COP.
Also important to note that my description for the 19th leaves out some short portions of the route, as this route is quite convoluted. I focused instead on locations that I felt important.
